Montauk’s iconic waterfront Lake House has found a buyer and is officially in contract. The amazing house is a part of a large compound at 22 and 26 Old West Lake Drive. The property was once listed for $9 million, but was more recently asking $7.95 million. The final sales price will be revealed once the buyers close on the property.
The new homeowners will get three buildings in total: a 4,500-square-foot main house with an open floorplan and water views throughout, a 1,800-square-foot guest house, and a barn that can be used for storage. In total, there is 6,500 square feet of space, 7 bedrooms, and 7 baths between all three structures.
Don’t be fooled by the description that architect Robert Young, of Robert Young Architects, gave of the place: “Three simple vernacular shapes — I call them Monopoly houses,” Young told Hamptons Cottages & Gardens in 2010. Located on 1.3 acres of land, this compound is anything but simple. It more than meets the original owner’s aims to accommodate three children and still have room to entertain guests. The design even won an award from the American Institute of Architects’ Long Island Chapter in 2012.
The architect’s site describes the main house as “two smaller gabled structures” that “bookend a central space that sits under an open gabled roof, running perpendicular to its two wings.” Within the 4,700-square-foot central living space is an open kitchen, living room, master bedroom featuring a private balcony and outdoor shower, and a single-story guest wing with sleeping loft. Each of the units are connected by steel and glass, to highlight the northern views of Lake Montauk and to maximize the sunlight and breezes that come from the south.
