20th Century Cottage in Sag Harbor Is Now a 21st Century Dream Home

Dream homes can arise from even the smallest of spaces. In the case of 72 Hempstead St. in Sag Harbor, .14 acres of land and a 1,000-square-foot cottage were all that Bernt Heiberg and Bill Cummings, of the internationally respected design firm Heiberg Cummings, needed to make something incredible. Purchased in 2017 for $825,000, and now offered for $2,995,000, the 1910 cottage originally had just 2 bedrooms. While there was no pool or tennis court, the home came with plenty of charm, thanks to details like a wood-burning fireplace and cathedral ceilings. And it was located less than a 10-minute walk from Havens Beach.

During their renovation and expansion, Heiberg and Cummings were sure to retain those great features. But they also managed to add 850 square feet of space, a second story, and 2 extra bedrooms, along with a heated gunite pool, a landscaped garden with an outdoor bath and shower, radiant floor heating, an outdoor dining patio, and a brand-new kitchen with Thermador appliances.

No strangers to renovating historic homes in Sag Harbor, Cummings and Heiberg can add this house to a portfolio that already includes a cottage at 8 Ackerly St. and another from 1840 located at 38 Howard St., in addition to their own 1834 Greek Revival house, which has been featured in Architectural Digest. “We love Sag Harbor,” Heiberg told Cottages & Gardens in 2015, “The whole town is so magical. We’ll be in Sag Harbor forever.” Now there’s an incredibly gorgeous way to join them.
